Leaking tank or no hot water
- Close the cold-water valve on top of the tank.
- Turn off power at the breaker (electric) or set the gas control to "off" (gas).
- Keep water away from the panel and outlets.
No hot water? Electric: check for a tripped breaker. Gas: check whether the pilot is out and follow the label to relight; never relight if you smell gas.
The U.S. Department of Energy says most households can set water heaters to 120°F (energy.gov).

Northlake's water heater rules
The Town has said that replacing a water heater requires a permit under Town code and state law (Town notice). A plumbing permit needing only one inspection is $50 (fee schedule §A2.006), and the plumber must be registered with the Town (Residential Construction Guide). Ask any plumber whether they're registered in Northlake before the job is scheduled.
